Dotted across the American Southwest, arid-land wetlands are home to endangered animals and plants found nowhere else on earth like the Pecos sunflower. However, 150 years of development, overgrazing, and climate change have made “ciénegas” the most endangered ecosystem of the Southwest. New Mexico State botanist has taken up the challenge to engage city government, landowners, schools, and the community of Santa Rosa in conserving these unique wetlands and plants as part of the natural heritage and future tourism of the community, before it is too late.

Our Team
In 2021, a group of VIPs (Very Impactful People) came together with the idea of celebrating the annual bloom of the endangered Pecos Sunflower. This volunteer group dedicated months in the planning, organizing and operation of the 3-day activity filled event.
Supported by the City of Santa Rosa, this event takes place the second weekend of September to coincide with the glorious bloom of the Pecos Sunflower. The Pecos Sunflower Festival brings locals and visitors to the Cienega to bring awareness of the conservation efforts of the wetland habitat as the community celebrates the rare and endangered species of the Blue Hole Cienega. Activities of the festival include live music, Blockheads Quilt Show, conservation/education programs, paint party, photography contest, Yoga with Sunflowers, 5k Walk, Run and Farmer's Market.
The events draw special interest groups like the Model T Club from Albuquerque, New Mexico as well as partnering with Impact Outdoors for the Fishing Derby at Perch Lake.
